Apprentice 1960-65. Metallurgist.
I recall the training centre at Radford. The basic training in the workshop was, later in life, invaluable. Jim Davies taught me to drive, passed first time. Day release at Coventry tech then Wednesbury, (nightmare car journey with other apprentices from other Coventry companies). During apprenticeship briefly on Herald line at Tile Hill. (Vividly recall how the car body was spread by brute force so doors would fit!)
Worked in labs by Experimental Dept at Fletch, Then at Tile Hill as paint chemist. (The factory reeked of white spirit from the degreasing prior to phosphating process!)

My Father George Horatio Thompson worked immediately before and during the second world war. The 1939 register shows that he was an armaments inspector anti-aircraft guns and he lived with his parents and siblings in Churchill Avenue, Foleshill. I remember him working later at Coventry Victor, Hadden and Abbotts and Standard Motors until his death at 49 but cannot find anything about Anti-Aircraft gun manufacture in 1939.rnHe was 19 at the time of the register, an engineering inspector all his working life I have his certificate from the Institution of Engineering showing that he was enrolled as an Associate Member of the Institution of Engineering Inspectors July 1952.

Dad was in the home guard, during the war, so had to shuffle shift-work between that and the Standard. Whenever I watched 'Dad's Army' I had to chuckle as I wondered if that was what it was really like! I don't think I ever wanted for anything. There was an ice-cream man used to come around the streets on his bike with a large metal box on the front, obviously a cooler of some kind. Dad kept chickens, ducks, and grew veg whenever he had the time. Lived on Lime Tree Avenue, Tile Hill, to 1947 and moved to Welland Road, Stoke

I WORKED for Triumph for more than 20 years, starting in 1968 at Tile Hill where I was working on the Herald and Vitesse.
I moved from there to Canley where I worked on the track building the Triumph 2000. That was my favourite Triumph - it was a big car with leather upholstery and it was great when I got to drive them around. I always wanted a 2000 of my own but I never got round to buying one.
I remember there were a lot of strikes in those days - I did not do a full week's work for years. I later moved into working on experimental prototypes and I retired aged 62 after Rover had taken over. It was a great place to work and there were some great lads.
