Like his father, Mac eventually joined the Standard Motor Company. He worked his way up to Chargehand and Foreman during the Fifties. He was based at the Radford Machine Shop for over two decades as Night Foreman. He enjoyed a close relationship with colleagues from all walks of life and over the years shared in the lives of men and women who knew him simply as 'Mac'. He was quite a storyteller. He related stories about his childhood days like playing pitch-and-toss, and winning, on his way to school. He told stories about his years at sea, tales which would keep those around him spellbound. He told stories about the goings on during the nightshift at the car factory. In his younger days Mac was a keen and successful darts player in the many local pubs and clubs around Tile Hill and Burton Green. He travelled to pubs and to work every day on his push bike and motor bike. On one occasion, returning home after a night on the ale, he parked his bike in someone else's garden, only realising his mistake when he was chased from their garden by a fierce dog. Mac was described by those who knew him well as a 'sound bloke'. Everyone knew if they needed a favour or wanted to borrow tolls or a few quid, they were always welcome at his home. If you locked yourself out, Mac would find a way in, one way or another. Until parting with his car at the age of seventy, you would often have found Mac on his driveway, wearing overalls, under a car, covered with grease and oil; or in his garage, fixing things or making his own designed replacement parts on his lathe.

Drawing Office.
Dad moved to Banner Lane when it was Standard then Massey Ferguson took over the plant and Dad continued with them. I know he worked on the development of the Triumph Herald code named 'Zobo". He did tell me that the Herald was suppossed to have an inward sloping rear window, but Ford beat them to it with the revamped Anglia so it was rapidly changed. I did go into the Banner Lane factory one Sunday as he had some work to do and as a young boy was very impressed when, after finishing his work in the drawing office, he took me down onto the factory where a few people were working and they all said "good morning Mr. Hayden"

I worked there for Mr. Bernard Roberts, the Sales Manager and I bought a 13/60 (hard top) off the Fleet! Navy blue, posh dashboard, I was the bees knees!
I was Secretary to Mr. Bernard Roberts (Fletchamstead Highway). Sales Manager. We had a front office! Mr. Roberts was under Sales Director Lyndon Mills. Mr. Roberts was very "abrupt" and one day I had the courage to say to him "say please"!? The following day to staggered through the office door (he was only a little man) with this enormous bouquet of flowers for me to say sorry!! I also bought a navy blue Triumph Herald, a year old, off the Fleet! It had a posh dashboard!

In the spirit of the 'doing my bit' I obtained work at the Standard Motor Co factory, Canley, Coventry. I was first employed in the Time Office; to which all prospective employees reported. I looked so young the boss took pity on me and employed me there until I was 15, but did not disclose his reason at the time. Meanwhile I traversed this huge and diverse factory site each morning to collect each employee's 'clock card' for marking up and then returned same to the card holders in the afternoon. The factory's war production covered manufacture of the Blenheim Bomber and the De Haviland Mosquito Fighter/Bomber, together with military vehicle engine production and sundry items; employing some 4,500 personnel.

I started with Standard Triumph in 1964 fresh from an apprenticeship with AEI. I stayed with the company in its many guises finally being The Human Resource Manager at Gaydon for Product Engineering and retired in 2002.

1968 to 1978 Saab Shop, 10 shop and 3,4,5 shop. Happy days and nights!
Triumph Motors produced the SAAB Slant Four Engine for several years. A similar version was later used in the Dolomite and Dolomite Sprint. The Stag V8 Engine was also produced in the SAAB Shop.

Worked there from the late 60s until he was made redundant in the 80s. He worked on the track and later on on snagging. He often used to travel to Honeybourne for snagging also as that is where they stock pilled the cars. At Christmas we used to recieve presents from the sports and social club.

I worked in 21 Shop, Canley, from 1963 until 1977.
The New Assembly Hall was always called the `ROCKET RANGE` within the factory. At the end of the 2000 production, all the last cars were Estate versions. Carbodies (the company that turned the Saloon bodies into Estate cars) had a lot of bodies left over. Otherwise we normally only did 2 or 3 Estate cars a day. The 2000`s were fully fitted out , but were taken elsewhere to be mounted on their Engines, Gearboxes, and Axles, Etc.

I worked at Standard Triumph/Leyland Cars from leaving get school in July 1969 to May 1979 when I left to have a baby. I worked in the Planning Department at Fletch North first as a copy typist, typing the instructions to make the cars, then onto being secretary to Mr Vic Ellis, the Production and Plant Engineering Manager. Like lots of other employees have said, it was a great place to work a day the money was OK too.

- Sister Edna Durham - Edna Durham, Sister-in-Charge of Surgeries at Standard-Triumph in Coventry. Miss Durham started work with the Company in 1946, as a nurse. She was promoted to Sister-in-Charge of Surgeries in 1959. She liked to keep up modern methods of treatment and install new equipment. Dedicated to her work, she undertook studies in industrial welfare.
- George Cox – Spray Painter, Final Finish - George Cox, a spray painter in Final Finish, Canley, retired after over 22 years’ service.
- Chris Andrews (President of Standard-Triumph Motor Co) - CE Andrews was appointed President of Standard-Triumph Motor Co.. New York, with effect from 1 June 1963.
- Philip Dunn - Philip Howard Milton Dunn was born in 1917. He was Standard Motor Co. staff number 473.
- Tim Hood - Following a recent post on the Standard Triumph Experimental Department Facebook, where I added a comment, somebody mentioned this directory and said I was listed but there is no info on me!
- 1925 Dispatch Dept. - A superb photo from 1925 showing the Dispatch Department at Canley.
- Paint Stores - A great photo from Martin Murphy, who says, “while going through some photos of my Aunty’s I came across this one. There are no names but it is definitely from the Standard as there was faint markings of the Standard logo.”
- Forward Radiator – Pt 1 - The Forward Radiator Company Limited was formed in February 1919 and I started work with them in September, 1922. I was the first clerical employee set on, all the clerical work up to this time having been done by “the boss’. Mr. C. N. Rawsthorne, the Secretary and Director of the Company.
- Walter Rubley - Walter Rubley was Factory Manager of the Car Division at The Standard Motor Company Limited, where he had been employed for 41 years.
- Jabbeke Speed Test – Original Standard Triumph period film - Original Standard Triumph period film of the Jabbeke speed test featuring TR2 prototype MVC575. This car has recently been restored. The film shows Sir John Black and Ken Richardson. Can you help with other names?
- Mavis Langdon - Hello, my name is Carmel Langdon and my mother Mavis Langdon, my aunts and their friends worked at Standard Triumph.
- Graham Richardson – Printing Dept. - I started working at Triumph in 1972 in the Printing Department, where I printed all the internal documents for parts forms, wages slips and all that was required. There were about 12 people who worked in that department.
- Bill Bullivant - A Second World War veteran and Standard Triumph manager has celebrated his 100th birthday in Coventry.
- Forward Radiator – Bordesley Green - Of the 53 years that the Forward Radiator Company of Bordesley Green Road, Birmingham, was in existence, the last decade was undoubtedly the most dramatic in the company’s long history.
