I started at Standard Triumph in the early 70s. Started at Car Despatch I spent a couple of years there and then went work in the home sales office for many years as a Distribution Liaison Officer under Ken Garnett and Arthur Constable and great work colleagues of which I still have fond memories. We would allocate all the new cars to dealers and distributors.

I worked in the Home Sales at Canley. I started in 1960. My boss was Mr Rushworth and my under boss was Mr Russell. I was there when the Triumph Herald was built and sold. We sold the cars to the distributors. The wages were very good we got merit rises every year. I worked with Jean, Muriel, Francis, Mary, Mavis, etc. I started straight from school I had to make the tea and collect the stationary, then did some typing. They took us on trips. One we went to Oxford first to Blenheim Palace then the Randoph Hotel, then down the river, we went to a field for a barbeque. We went in Standard Vanquard cars. We were a great team.

Paint Trim and Assembly Section of the Planning Department in Fletch North.
Used to play the trumpet in local Jazz bands in Coventry particularly in the Earlsdon Cottage.
I was a JRT sponsored student from 1980~1984 and spent time in several departments at Canley - Prototype Build, NVH and Trim and Hardware Design - before joining the Aerodynamic Department full-time in the autumn of 1984.
I moved to the Chassis Department at Longbridge in 1985 but returned to Canley in 1990, working in the Brakes Development team. We were amongst the last few people in Building 50 when it was cleared before being demolished as part of the site clearance.
We moved into the old NVH area in Building 40 Basement.
I moved back to Longbridge in 1992.
I have many happy memories of the site and the people, especially Building 50.
The site is fascinating and I have several stories to add but no photos unfortunately.

Black, John (Sir)
10 February 1895 – 24 December 1965
September 1929 took up a new position at the Standard Motor Company. He was appointed Standard's joint managing director (with founder R W Maudslay) in September 1933.
He was injured in late 1953 in an accident when being given a demonstration of the Swallow Doretti. His fellow board members believed this affected his judgment and he was forced to resign in January 1954, officially because of his health.
In December 1954 Black accepted an appointment as deputy chairman of Enfield Cables Ltd. In his retirement he took up farming. He died suddenly at Cheadle Hospital, Cheadle, Cheshire on 24 December 1965 at the age of 70.
Shortly after Black died in 1965, Alick Dick, his successor at the helm of Standard-Triumph, recalled Black with obvious affection as an "extrovert and exciting, if somewhat controversial personality".

I served my apprenticeship at the Triumph Motor Co. We were based at Tile Hill training school. All the apprentices served a period of time there, then they were sent off to their departments at Canley, where they would further their careers. I was based at the Tinsmiths near Ivy Cottage, apprentices there at same time were Bill Mcintosh, Eddie Howard, Paul Tranter, Kev Winters, Geoff Turner, Rob Naismith. I stayed there until it was shutting. These we’re good times and we had some good laughs I have just retired from Rolls Royce it was never the same as the Triumph.

My wife's dad Horace Bott worked on the TR line as high as TR6 and towards the end on the dud line at the track at Canley. Retired around 1980. Horace always parked his own car near to the gate, in gear ready to start... and as soon as it was knock off time charged out to be one of the first cars out....then he would head to his own private business garage fixing cars in Wyken with his brother and best friend.

My dad started as a HGV driver and I remember him saying that he used to bring car bodies from somewhere. He then went on to become a chauffeur and retired from that position in about 1991 aged 63. My uncle Bob worked as a grinder I don't know where in the factory but he retired at 65 in about 1982. All I know about my uncle Arthur was that he had something to do with the canteen.

Brennan, Jack (proper name John Edward)
Worked at the Canley factory in the fifties after leaving the RAF. I can't remember which department he was in, and he's passed now, so I can't ask him. I do remember him going to work on his trusty old green bike, until he bought his first car, a Standard Vanguard, around 1958. I remember one Summer the whole family went up to the Lake District in it, and having to get out half way up a very steep hill because either the clutch was slipping or the gearbox was a bit dodgy! My father left the Standard in the early sixties and set up his own engineering business.

My dad worked at the Standard many years ago. He worked in the boiler house when the heating was fueled by coal. They kept the boilers running by shoveling coal into the ovens. In later years it was replaced by gas so the job consisted of checking dials. Dad preferred the old way. He worked a 3 weekly shift pattern.
Not sure when he started but I think it was late 40s. He took early retirement due to ill health mid 60s. He passed away 1980
