My father - 10/01/22 (now deceased) travelled from Stockingford in Nuneaton to work at Triumph Canley Plant. He was a track worker on 2000's, 1500's, Spitfire etc. He must have started work there about early 1960's and he was there till the plant closed about 1976/1977(?) I know he worked night shifts for some time. I remember when l was about 10yrs old (1971) and dad took me into his workplace and all l remember is how incredibly noisy the place was... which probably explained his hearing problems in later life!

What memories of the old Standard Motor Company there must be around the world.
At the end of the Second World War, thousands of ex-servicemen were looking to get back to the jobs they had left while serving the country. Many others were looking to get into the Standard, as the family atmosphere and high wages were well known in the industry.
Sir John Black and his wife had a great interest in the men who had served the country, forming the pipe band that not only travelled the length and breadth of this country, but toured and were acclaimed all around Europe.
Hundreds of Americans would arrive at Canley, where their new sports cars would be assembled in front of the main offices. The pipe band would play them off, for the tour of Europe, thus advertising some of the finest cars made at the time.
In those days before the introduction of car delivery, garage owners would pick up the new cars from the factory. One lady that I remember travelled every day - twice a day on occasion - from Gloucester. And there were no motorways in those days.
Having spent nearly 20 years as a foreman, plus time on the shop floor, and having had some real work friends over the years, I thank those who are organising the celebrations. And thank you to Coventry for giving a good living to thousands from across the globe.

Just found the website via Facebook no idea what I was searching for but worked at the A40 Western Ave site, still have wage slips (why I don’t know) from when I worked there... is there a way on the website to search for people’s name who worked there...
Have a list of dates of when I worked there as left at one point and then went back for a second stint...
Steve - please send more details including dates you worked. There is quite a bit now about Western Avenue - which is searchable on the search box in the articles (as opposed to the name directory) with any names then being within the articles. ED
Update: Started work there July 1966 and left in June 1969....
Told by Jock Brown to go and see him when I tried to get my job back there, and I did started again Sept 1970 - Feb 1976 where I left the motor trade for good, the time between I had worked at Lancia as they were just up the road from where I lived and celebrated a win when they won on the RAC rally... and my next profession until I retired I became a trucker....
Seen some photos on the web site of the apprentices who I knew, but think I was just classed when I started as trainee and my first car to learn to drive in was a triumph spitfire, I also done a few stints at the London motor show on the triumph stand....

Pyatt, Tony
Editor of Standard Triumph Monthly Newspaper.
c late fifties upto 1964
Born in Kent, Mr Pyatt lived his early life in the south of the country before the family moved to East Anglia, where he attended Wisbech Grammar School, one of the oldest schools in the country. In early 1933, he started work as an indentured apprentice on the Wisbech Standard – the beginning of a lifelong love affair with newspapers.
He joined the Territorial Army in 1939 and two weeks later with the outbreak of war was called up to the 48th Royal Tank Regiment, initially as a Trooper and rising to the rank of Lieutenant and tank commander. His war service brought him to Suffolk – where he met his wife Audrey – and billets at Glevering Hall, near Wickham Market, and Orwell Park, where the tanks had to be waterproofed before being loaded onto ships at Felixstowe for the D-Day landings.
Mr Pyatt left for D-Day from the Port of London, as a signals officer in charge of communications for the regiment, landing with thousands of other British soldiers to secure the beachhead on Gold Beach. He said: “We had some hairy battles in the landing area, Arromanches, Caen and Bayeux. I was with the regiment all the time as we moved through Europe and Germany to Berlin, where I spent my last six months in the Army before being demobbed.
“I was so thankful that I came through it all and I was never wounded.”
