James, Vincent John.
My father who died in 1984 was born in Bargoed in South Wales in January 1918 and left school at 16 with a matriculation (1934). Like many very young men from South Wales at the time left Wales to find work. He came to stay in Coventry and after finding casual work then manged to get an apprenticeship as Tool Maker at Standard Triumph. Dad did not start his apprenticeship at 16 but I don’t know how long he was doing causal work before he got the apprenticeship. He told us In the summer of ‘39 he was doing war work which we probably wrongly assumed was to do with military vehicles. Dad told us as soon as his apprenticeship was served he was made a Reserved Occupation category worker and ‘posted’ to work for the Ministry of Aircraft Production. Dad later got posted, I don’t think he had any say in it, to various places around the UK as an inspector of munitions (Ministry of Munitions?). Dad went on to train as draftsman, we think post war given the munitions related roles, and worked as a design draughtsman till his retirement.

Rear axle inspector: I worked at Standard Triumph for 40 years, 27 of which were at the Capmartin Road site. At 16, I started doing my apprenticeship with Standard, working on the Vanguard, but then moved to Radford with the factory. I built the very first Herald through to the very last, only leaving when the plant closed in 1986. It was my job to make sure that nothing got through that wasn't perfect. I remember one car I owned where everything had to be replaced, except for the rear axle, that was the only thing that hadn't been changed!
